#NoMakeup: A-Listers and the Fresh-Faced Selfie Trend

The hottest makeup trend right now isn’t boyfriend brows, smoky eyes or matte lipstick — it’s wearing none whatsoever. Need evidence? Take a quick scan of celebrity Instagram accounts — more and more A-listers, from actresses and pop stars to supermodels, are going au naturel and proudly posting photos to prove it.

Sure, we all have fun trying out a new look now and then for date night or a special event. But there’s also something inexplicably empowering about ditching the eyeliner and bronzer and simply embracing your natural beauty (try this melting cleansing balm to remove long-lasting makeup). Read on for a look back at some memorable #nomakeup selfies from our favourite stars, plus some tips on how to rock the makeup-free look yourself.

Alicia Keys
One might say that Alicia Keys started the #nomakeup movement. The singer-songwriter even made an announcement to fans that she would be skipping out on makeup in both her personal and public life. In her essay for the email newsletter Lenny Letter, she spoke about striving to feel confident without the help of any mascara or lip gloss. "Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn't put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it???” she wrote.

“These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking.” Her attitude changed after a shoot for her single “In Common,” when a photographer took some photos of her with no makeup on. “I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing," Keys has said.

Gwyneth Paltrow
This actress shared a selfie captioned, "#nomakeup for my 44th birthday, embracing my past and future.” Paltrow looked incredibly fresh-faced, with a flawless complexion, beachy hair and a sparkling smile.

Achieving (and maintaining) an even tone like Paltrow’s with no foundation whatsoever requires wearing SPF to combat sun damage and redness. Ideally, you should apply a naturally-derived product, like Green Screen, daily. This SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen is brimming with antioxidants to reduce dark spots and even skin tone while protecting the skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays, free radicals and other pollutants in the environment — all of which contribute to premature ageing.

Cameron Diaz
For some time now, Diaz has been a proponent of ageing gracefully. Hence, it came as no surprise when she posted a bare-fared Instagram captioned, "I'm so excited to continue the conversation because learning that you can age well will actually help you age better. If you understand how your body works, then you can take action to help keep it in the best possible condition so it can carry you through a long and beautiful life.” In another post, the actress challenged followers to submit selfies showing where they are in the ageing process.

Eager to maintain a youthful complexion like Diaz? Seek out products that contain Echinacea GreenEnvy™ — it boasts a high concentration of the antioxidant Cichoric Acid, which helps to protect and support the skin’s collagen for a firmer, more supple appearance. For example, Invincible, a root cell anti-aging serum contains this patent-protected variant of Echinacea Purpurea. To boot, the serum includes Proform vitamin C and Strelitzia Nicolai Seed Aril Extract for an extra dose of illumination, as well as a unique triple hyaluronic acid complex, which helps your skin seal in moisture while also boosting production of collagen and elastin, both of which are crucial for young-looking skin.

A post shared by Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) on

Lady Gaga
While Gaga has been known to rock some bold makeup looks in performances and on the red carpet, if you peruse the singer’s Instagram account, you’ll notice that she looks bare-faced in many of them. It seems in her downtime, she prefers to be low-maintenance — in fact, on her 30th birthday, she posted a selfie sans makeup.

She also celebrated her new album dropping by posting a makeup-less selfie. If a glamorous pop star can go without makeup, why can’t you? The key, of course, is to find both a morning and nighttime regimen that works for your skin’s specific needs. For example, those with dry skin should be sure to incorporate a gentle cleanser, such as Clear Bloom. The unique oil formulation cleanses the skin of dirt and impurities without drying it out, leaving it soft and smooth.

The product contains sunflower oil, which because it contains a high ratio of linoleic acid to oleic acid, can help to improve the skin barrier function. The skin barrier function plays a role in not only combating dehydration by keeping moisture in but also blocking any harmful chemicals and irritants.

Salma Hayek
What’s the secret to the perfect selfie? According to Salma Hayek (via her Instagram caption): "Wet hair, no make-up, no filter, no retouch, but very good light." She looked fresh-faced and radiant with no extra help whatsoever from cosmetics.

To achieve the A-list star’s glowing complexion, try using Honey Potion with Echinacea GreenEnvy™. The antioxidant-rich hydration mask features an ultra-nourishing combination of honey, a natural humectant (meaning it draws moisture to your skin) and amino acids, as well as essential B vitamins that promote cell renewal for a youthful appearance. Battling dullness or uneven skin texture? The product has been shown to offer a smooth, glowing complexion.

Cindy Crawford
As both a mom and supermodel, Cindy Crawford is constantly on the go. Still, she didn’t show any signs of fatigue or jet lag in a no-makeup selfie she posted from a Miami hotel bed — in fact, she looked downright youthful and alert. She also posted another makeup-less selfie to celebrate her 50th birthday. To look as refreshed as Crawford (no matter how much sleep you’ve gotten), apply the Dew It All Total eye cream both morning and night to firm up and brighten the skin around the eyes while simultaneously minimizing the appearance of dark circles.

  1. This is very sad that makeup is not a choice but compulsion for these A-listers. Very nice post and trend as well to increase awareness that usage of makeup is not compulsion, if it makes you happy use it, if not then go ahead with no makeup look. 💗👌👏

  3. Great tips. My style generally is no make-up. Too much as well on my skin for my age does really look that attractive. I sure gathered great tips from this pitching.
