My Experience With Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder (Review):

I have been struggling with grey hair issues since my university days (genetics, thanks to my mom’s side!). From just a couple of white hairs to now having 80% grey hair at 40, my hair journey has been quite pathetic, lol 😂 !

I was simply using natural red henna powder to dye my hair until two years ago. Since I had been using henna for the longest time along with different herbs, it naturally gave my hair a beautiful brown tint instead of the usual orangish-red colour. But somehow, I wasn’t happy with my red-tinted tresses! I came across my blogger bestie Sonali’s social media post about Indigo powder and instantly decided to give it a try. Because honestly, who doesn’t like nice jet-black hair?

She gave me all the necessary information about the powder and how it works. So, the next time I visited India, I bought a few packs of Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder from Amazon and started my Henna + Indigo hair journey.

Packaging:

Attar Ayurveda Pure & Natural Indigo Powder comes in a nice cardboard box packaging. The back panel provides detailed instructions, benefits, and product information. Inside the box, there is a sealed semi-transparent plastic bag containing the Indigo powder.

How I use Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder:

The Attar Ayurveda website has clear instructions on how to use their natural and herbal Indigo powder to achieve both brown and black hair colours. Since I prefer black hair, I simply followed their specific directions for Black Colour (Two-Step Process).

The application process for Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder happens in two simple stages. First comes the henna treatment, followed by the Indigo application for that rich natural black shade. It may sound like a long ritual at first, but honestly, once you get the hang of it, it feels more like a relaxing hair-care routine than a complicated colouring process 🙂.

For the first step, mix Henna Leaves Powder (any brand) with water to create a thick, smooth paste that spreads easily through the hair. Let the mixture rest for a few hours or overnight before applying it evenly from roots to ends. After leaving it on your hair for about two to three hours, rinse and dry your hair thoroughly. Please do not use shampoo. This step naturally turns white or grey strands into a reddish tone while adding soft shine and healthy-looking texture to the hair.

The second step is where the magic really happens. The next day, prepare a fresh smooth paste in a glass bowl using an equal quantity of Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder and lukewarm water. Cover the mixture and allow it to rest briefly so the paste does not dry out too quickly. Once ready, apply it evenly over your dry henna-treated hair and cover your hair with a shower cap to lock in moisture during the process.

After one to two hours, rinse your hair well with plain water and allow it to dry naturally. Avoid shampooing on the same day, as the colour needs time to settle properly into the hair. Shampooing after a couple of days works best for deeper, longer-lasting results. I use shampoo on the fourth or fifth day, as suggested by my bestie, and it works great!

Finally, apply a little hair oil or hydrating serum after drying to keep the hair soft, nourished, and beautifully glossy.

Product Performance:

Attar Ayurveda was the first Indigo powder brand I tried in my life. One time, I couldn’t visit India, so I had to order a different Indigo powder brand, It’s Pure, from Amazon UK. I haven’t tried any other brands yet, so I can’t comment on them for now.

I dye my hair once a month. For my mid-back-length, thin, long hair, I need at least 50g of Indigo powder every time, so a 100g packet lasts me about two months. If you have only a few grey hairs, a small amount should be sufficient for you!

The hair dye application process is honestly quite a task! One thing I dislike about all Indigo powders is their overpowering scent. The smell lingers until shampooing, so keep that in mind! Also, always wear gloves while applying henna or an Indigo powder mask to your hair because it stains nails, clothes, bathroom basins, and kitchen sinks... basically everything. I try to clean the stains as quickly as possible to avoid permanent dark spots.

Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder In Action

Attar Ayurveda indigo leaf powder imparts a nice black colour to my hair. But unfortunately, it never lasts long despite using good colour-protect natural shampoos. As I mentioned multiple times, 80% of my hair is grey now, mostly around the temple and crown areas. Plus, I have sinus issues, so I cannot dye my hair twice a month. I am so disappointed with its poor staying power 😭.

Every time I used this Indigo powder, it either couldn’t colour my roots properly or completely missed some parts of my scalp. No matter how thoroughly I applied the Indigo paste to my hair, the reddish henna-dyed strands would still peek through afterwards!

It was only after using the second Indigo brand that I noticed a major difference in performance. Unfortunately, Attar Ayurveda Indigo Powder didn’t win the battle, so I stopped using it altogether.

I have had no allergic reactions to this Indigo powder. Make sure you do not leave the mask on for more than three hours, as it might dry out your hair. Also, do a patch test before using any indigo powder!

Since I have been using henna since my teenage years, my hair texture has become slightly dry over time 😒. So, I do nourishing hair masks once a month to keep my dull, breakage-prone hair soft and shiny.

Conclusion:

To sum up,

Attar Ayurveda Indigo Leaf Powder is a nice chemical-free, PPD-free, ammonia-free, preservative-free pure Indigo powder that naturally makes your hair black.

However, if your grey hair condition is similar to mine, I probably would not recommend this brand. Those with fewer grey hair issues can certainly give it a try! You can also try other Indian brands or It’s Pure Indigo Powder if it is available in your country.
