My Experience With SUKIN Natural Balance Vegan Scalp Scrub (Review):
(Hair Type : Oily scalp-dry ends, low porosity)
To be honest, I was never really into scalp care! I would simply wash my hair, follow it with a conditioner or hair mask, and call it a day. I vividly remember what our family doctor back home advised my elder sister a few years ago: ‘If you want to reduce hair fall, focus on your scalp health’. Ever since then, I've paid much more attention to my haircare routine 🙂.
When I received this scalp scrub sample in one of my old beauty subscription boxes, I immediately added this extra step to my haircare routine. I have to admit, using a scalp scrub before every hair wash once a week has worked wonders for my hair. So, how does it work, and what should you expect from it? Let's discuss!

Product Packaging:
The product comes housed in a sleek, recyclable squeeze tube bottle with a flip-top cap. The sturdy cap serves as a flat base so the tube can stand upright, ensuring the product is always ready to flow, while the secure flip mechanism prevents shower water from slipping inside. You can find the detailed ingredient list, clear directions for use and other important details on the back of the tube. It’s travel-friendly.
Product Texture:
Sukin Natural Balance Scalp Scrub has a smooth, opaque creamy texture with gritty micro-particles. It has a mild fragrance.

Product Performance:
There are two types of exfoliants available for both our skin and scalp: physical scrubs and liquid chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs). Just like our skin, our scalp also benefits from regular exfoliation to remove product build-up and dead skin cells.
SUKIN scalp scrub is a natural physical scrub which has a creamy, plant-based base packed with nourishing oils (like sesame and soybean) and herbal extracts (peppermint, ginger, and nettle). It’s composed of finely ground bamboo powder and pumice gritty particles which physically sweep away dead skin and product build-up as you massage the scrub into your scalp.
How I Use It?
I take a generous amount of the Sukin scrub and apply it to my damp hair, then gently scrub my scalp and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Remember, when it comes to cleansing action, never use hot or extreme cold water, lukewarm water is ideal.
Now honestly, I don’t like using physical scrubs for my skin and hair anymore! I love liquid versions more for their convenience of use and because they're less irritating. Moreover, I don't struggle with loose flakes, so liquid exfoliants work better for my scalp health. If you are like me, I’ve listed a few top natural, organic, and clean liquid scalp treatments below that are physical scalp scrub alternatives, check them out.
Haircare Tips After Using a Scalp Scrub:
That being said, Sukin Natural Balance scalp scrub is extremely gentle. Upon application, it gives a nice, refreshing sensation to the scalp and the mild gritty microparticles cleanse deeply by removing all the product build-up and debris. This also makes it a great option for low-porosity hair, which is naturally more prone to product build-up due to its tightly packed cuticles.
Since it has a creamy base, the gritty texture doesn’t feel harsh on the scalp. However, I do find scrubbing quite annoying especially when my scalp is too oily and dirty!! I can’t explain the feeling, but I just don't enjoy the experience 😭.
I follow up with a nice hydrating shampoo, hair mask, and conditioner.. Yes, on days when I am using a scalp scrub, I try to apply both mask and conditioner to my colour-treated (henna-dyed), damaged hair!!
Please do not use any harsh clarifying shampoo or hair treatment in combination with this scalp scrub as the results will be rough, straw-like hair strands and dry itchy scalp! Also, make sure you’re following up with gentle, hydrating haircare products (leave-in serum or conditioners) afterwards.
This mild physical scalp scrub never irritated my scalp skin or caused me any issues so far! After each wash, my scalp feels clean, fresh and light. If you don’t want to invest in scalp scrubs (physical or chemical), you can simply use a good-quality apple cider vinegar pre-wash. More on this below!

Is It Safe for Colour-Treated Hair?
If you have colour-treated hair (henna or chemical), this product is for you! SUKIN natural balance scalp scrub is colour safe, thankfully. Even though it’s a physical scrub, it contains no harsh exfoliating acids, sulfates or silicones. It only has Lactic Acid, which is used at a very low percentage at the end of the ingredient list strictly as a pH balancer. It uses Bamboo Powder and Pumice to physically scrub away flakes and product buildup. It contains Decyl Glucoside, a mild, plant-derived cleanser that cleanses without stripping natural oils or hair colour. Basically, it won’t strip henna or permanent dye from your hair!!
Overall, if you love the refreshing sensation of a physical massage (thanks to the peppermint) and want a natural, gritty scrub to lift large, loose flakes, SUKIN natural balance scalp scrub is for you.

List of Natural Liquid Scalp Treatments (UK):
The top natural, organic, and clean liquid scalp treatments powered by plant-derived AHAs/BHAs, fruit enzymes, and clean botanical bases specifically formulated to melt heavy styling product buildup include:
1. Aveda Scalp Solutions Exfoliating Scalp Treatment
- The Exfoliant: Natural salicylic acid derived from wintergreen.
- Texture: A lightweight, cooling liquid-gel.
- Why it's perfect: It is 96% naturally derived, completely vegan, and silicone-free and behaves exactly like a skincare liquid exfoliant but is tailored for the hair. It is clinically proven to reduce scalp sebum (oil) by 76% without using any harsh scrub particles. You apply it straight to the scalp using its precision nozzle before washing.
2. Act+Acre Cold Processed BHA Salicylic Acid Scalp Exfoliator
- The Exfoliant: Clean, gentle 0.15% Salicylic Acid combined with organic oils.
- Texture: Fluid, water-like serum.
- Why it's perfect: Act+Acre uses a patented cold-pressing technique to ensure the organic ingredients stay potent. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, meaning it passes straight through heavy, oil-based styling waxes or serums that regular shampoo can't touch, cleaning deep inside the hair follicle wall. This is a 15-minute pre-wash treatment designed specifically to dissolve stubborn oil and product buildup inside the hair follicles.
3. Growth Bomb AHA Scalp Exfoliant
- The Exfoliant: Natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) sourced from fruit extracts.
- Texture: Liquid serum.
- Why it's perfect: Instead of synthetic glycolic acid, it uses organic fruit enzymes to chemically melt away scalp residue. It also contains natural caffeine from the Yerba Maté leaf to energise the scalp and promote hair health.
4. Alpha-H Healthy Scalp Exfoliating Treatment
- The Exfoliant: Encapsulated salicylic acid paired with a natural Rice Vinegar Complex.
- Texture: Lightweight fluid with a targeted nozzle.
- Why it fits: While a clinical brand, this formula leans heavily on clean, vegan sourcing and features Australian Desert Lime to break down oil and boost shine. It works efficiently as a pre-wash step in just 1 to 15 minutes.
5. Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Buildup Detox Spray
- The Exfoliant: A plant-powered triple-acid complex (AHA/BHA/PHA) combined with Binchotan charcoal.
- Texture: A lightweight, no-grain pre-wash spray.
- Why it's perfect: It is a 95% naturally derived formula designed explicitly for product heavy-users. The charcoal acts like a magnet to pull stubborn styling resins and dry shampoo away from the scalp, while the fruit and plant acids dissolve the remaining film. You spray it directly onto the areas with the most buildup 15 minutes before showering.
6. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Scalp Rinses
- The Exfoliant: Natural acetic acid and organic fruit enzymes.
- Texture: Pure liquid water-rinse.
- Why it's too good: If you want a completely organic, non-synthetic alternative to chemical bottles, raw unfiltered ACV (such as Bragg Organic ACV) is the original liquid exfoliant. Its natural acidity safely strips away stubborn product coatings on the scalp and flat hair strands while restoring your scalp's pH balance. You can mix 1 part organic ACV with 3 parts water in a spray bottle, apply to the roots for 5 minutes, and rinse.
