Birchbox Re.fil Beauty Balm Review:
Product Descriptions:
Not just a lip balm, this is your salve for anything (plus, it's refillable!). With so many uses, from lips, to cuticles, to dry patches, and even taming your brows, this is your ultimate all-over balm. Made with a blend of natural oils, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and squalane, it hydrates and conditions dry skin, helps promote skin barrier function, and leaves a protective layer that's light and soft (never sticky!). It has just a hint of chamomile for a light and calming scent.

My Experience With Birchbox Re.fil Beauty Balm (Review):
(Lips skin: Dry and pigmented)
Birchbox launched Re.fil, a Refillable Beauty Brand, a couple of years ago. Fil's first product was a lip and multipurpose balm called Beauty Balm, which is 95% reusable and sold in a refillable case. I finished this beauty balm just a few months back and also featured it in my last Product Empties post. The beauty balms are available in three colours - dark green, light green, and tan/peach colour. I got the dark green one in my beauty box.
Product Packaging:
Birchbox Re.fil beauty balm comes in a recyclable and refillable plastic case with a cap. The dark green bottle looks cute and is travel-friendly. To know about the product details, visit their website because the packaging does not feature anything.
TEXTURE - BIRCHBOX RE.FIL BEAUTY BALM |
Product Texture:
Birchbox Re.fil beauty balm is a cream-colored balm that looks transparent on the lips upon application. It has a natural, mild, and calming chamomile scent to it.

How I used it:
Birchbox describes this Re.fil beauty balm as a multipurpose salve for any skin dryness issue. But I mainly used this product as a lip balm (more on it below). You can certainly use your fingers for the application. I simply applied the balm directly to my upper and lower lips from the center towards the corners and then blended my lips together so the balm spread nicely.
Performance/What it does:
As a lip balm, this Re.fil beauty balm spreads easily on the lips. Upon application, it looks transparent and gives off a matte finish, not glossy. I love that it is non-sticky, lightweight, and has a lovely fragrance!
Birchbox Re.fil multi-purpose beauty balm is super effective at moisturising dry lips. It kept my chapped lips nourished for a good amount of time. Re-application is required, but unlike other balms, you don’t have to apply it every three hours to moisturise your lips! I had to reapply it thrice a day after breakfast, lunch, and dinner only. It keeps my lips soft under (dry) liquid lipsticks, as well.
BIRCHBOX RE.FIL BEAUTY BALM (LOTD) |
Although it’s a multi-purpose balm, I rarely use it for other skin issues. I don’t feel comfortable putting the same balm onto my lips as well as other parts of my body. At times, when I would use the topical acne-clearing ointment on my pesky pimples, it would leave those spots dry and flaky. I can tackle this issue any day with a heavy-duty moisturiser, but with full makeup on, it’s so hard to cover! Hence, to moisturise those dry patches, I did use this Re.fil balm as a salve using my fingers and got great results. Within an hour, it healed the dryness, and my skin looked better and healthy. So, yes, it’s really an efficient multi-purpose balm for everyday use.
Now, the main concern with this product is the availability of its refills. Each Re.fil beauty balm case is made from PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic. The fun part is, even though the brand describes the product as refillable and their motto behind creating this balm was to help keep plastic out of our landfills, they failed. To our dismay, they have discontinued the Balm Refills 😑!
I seriously want to know, what’s the point of creating and advertising a sustainable and refillable product if you end up stopping the refill sales? Yes, you can still try and buy this balm from their website. However, once you empty the product, you’ll have to purchase a new one because refills are not available anymore ( as of Feb 2024). Bummer!
