On the joyous occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, why not try your hand at making Chirer Naru, also known as Poha Laddoo? This delightful vegetarian sweet is perfect as an offering to the Gods or as a tasty treat for your loved ones, especially the little ones. Excited to learn the recipe? Keep scrolling down!
In Bengali, we call flattened rice as Chira (known as Poha in other parts of India), which I like to think of as a close cousin to puffed rice. The term for balls or laddoos is "naru" or "nadu" in Bengali. Personally, I adore this laddoo and frequently whip up a batch for my family. If you enjoy soft-textured sweets or have sensitive teeth, you'll find this chirer naru to be a delightful choice 😉.
The best part is you only need a handful of ingredients, and it's incredibly easy to make (perfect for those of us who aren't fans of lengthy recipes) 😛! If you're in India, you probably have everything you need right in your kitchen. But if you're abroad, just pop into your nearest Indian grocery store and pick up the essentials listed below to create this delicious poha laddoo 😍.

How To Make Poha/Chira Laddoo (Flattened Rice Balls) Recipe:
By the way, there are two simple ways to make these delightful laddoos. First, I'll walk you through my usual method using desiccated coconut flakes. Then, I'll share my mom's version, which she makes with fresh coconuts. You can choose whichever method suits what you have on hand.
Method 1:
➡️ Start by heating a pan over medium heat. Add a cup of Chira/Poha/Flattened rice and stir for a few seconds until it turns slightly crunchy.
➡️ Next, add desiccated coconut flakes and almond powder (optional) to the pan and mix well. If you already have finely powdered coconut, you can skip this step.

➡️ Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool for a couple of minutes.
➡️ Once cooled, grind the mixture into a fine powder.
➡️ Now, transfer the powder into a large mixing bowl. Add 2 teaspoons of milk, cardamom powder, ghee, and jaggery. Since my husband has diabetes, I use only half a cup of jaggery, but you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. Mix everything well by using a hamandista (mortar & pestle) or hands.

Method 2:
👉🏻 Begin by heating a pan and adding a cup of Chira/Poha/Flattened rice. Stir for a few seconds until it becomes a bit crunchy!
👉🏻 Next, grind this mixture into a fine powder.
👉🏻 Now, in a large bowl, combine the powder with fresh coconut flakes, cardamom powder, ghee, almond or cashew powder (optional), and soft jaggery. The fresh coconut will release some milk, making the mixture softer, so you can skip adding any extra milk 🙂.
👉🏻 Use your hands/mortar & pestle to mix and mash everything thoroughly. To make shaping easier, rub a little ghee on your palms and form small, round laddoos.
You can store these laddoos in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, though in my house, they’re usually gone within a couple of days 😀!

So, those are the two easy methods to make chirer naru. Simple, right? I first made these when I was just 12! Back then, we didn’t have a mixer grinder, so my mom or dad would help me mix everything by hand ❤️.

Since I love making this sweet treat for my family, I thought I’d share the recipe with all of you 🙂.
