Gentle Exfoliating Face Mask DIY Recipe for Dull, Tanned Skin

Diwali is just around the corner! If you've noticed tanned, dull or uneven-looking skin after all those morning pandal-hopping sessions during Durga Puja, or simply because of your everyday outdoor activities, here's a gentle homemade face pack you might want to try.

This is one of my go-to DIY face packs before special occasions when I want my skin to feel smoother and look fresher under makeup. It helps remove surface impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin feeling soft and refreshed. Want to know how to make it? Keep scrolling!

DIY Rice Flour & Milk Face Pack: A Simple, Gentle Exfoliant for Dull, Tanned Skin

I know, I know! In this era of skincare acids and sophisticated exfoliating serums, physical scrubs aren't everyone's favourite anymore. We are increasingly leaning towards chemical exfoliants because they can offer more controlled exfoliation when formulated and used correctly.

But what about traditional, cream-based homemade face packs?

I still enjoy using them occasionally. A simple rice flour and milk/yogurt face pack can provide mild physical exfoliation when used gently. The trick is to choose fine ingredients, prepare the right consistency and, most importantly, avoid rubbing your skin aggressively.

I have combination, sensitive and acne-prone skin with hyperpigmentation, and unfortunately, my skin gets tanned very easily!

Even 15 minutes under direct sunlight can leave me looking noticeably tanned. A full day of outdoor activities? Oh, that's another story altogether! It can take me several weeks to get my skin tone looking even again. Ugh 😩!

Sometimes, I really envy my friends and peers who don't seem to tan as easily. I religiously apply generous amounts of sunscreen, yet pigmentation and tanning remain recurring concerns for me.

Nevertheless, without further ado, let's get into today's DIY recipe!

Ingredients:

For this traditional homemade face pack, you'll need:

👉🏻 1 tablespoon fine rice flour

👉🏻 1–2 tablespoons cold raw milk or Greek yogurt

👉🏻 ½ teaspoon aloe vera gel

Optional: A little honey, if your skin tolerates it 🙂.

I prefer using yogurt instead of raw milk for this recipe. Choose plain, unsweetened yogurt without added flavours or fragrances.

The Benefits of These Ingredients:

Rice Flour: Finely ground rice flour acts as a mild physical exfoliant that helps remove loose dead skin cells and surface impurities. Regular, gentle exfoliation can help improve the appearance of dull, rough and uneven-looking skin, including skin that looks tired after sun exposure. It leaves the skin feeling smoother and looking fresher, giving it a more radiant appearance. However, rice flour does not reverse UV damage or directly remove established sunspots and pigmentation.

Milk/Yogurt: Milk contains proteins, fats and lactic acid, a naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) that can help loosen dead skin cells. Yogurt also contains lactic acid and has a creamy consistency that helps create a smooth, spreadable face pack. While the lactic acid concentration in ordinary milk and yogurt is relatively low and variable compared with formulated exfoliating products, both ingredients make lovely additions to a traditional homemade face pack.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is traditionally used in skincare for its soothing and moisturising properties. It also contains aloesin, a compound that has shown potential in research on pigmentation. However, more evidence is needed to establish the effectiveness of homemade aloe vera masks for fading dark spots.

Honey (Optional): Honey is a natural humectant, which means it helps attract and retain moisture in the skin. It also contains naturally occurring antioxidants and has skin-conditioning properties that can help leave the skin feeling soft, supple and moisturised. Its smooth, sticky consistency also adds a lovely creamy texture to homemade face packs.

Rice Flour & Milk/Yogurt Pack: Step-by-Step Recipe

1) Take a small, clean mixing bowl. Add one tablespoon of fine rice flour.

2) Next, add 1–2 tablespoons of plain yogurt or cold raw milk. I used yogurt for this recipe, but you can adjust the quantity depending on the consistency you prefer.

3) Add approximately half a teaspoon of aloe vera gel. You can also add a little honey if you like. I love adding honey to my homemade face packs, but it's completely optional.

Use plain honey rather than flavoured or infused varieties. If you have sensitive skin, patch-test it first, as natural ingredients can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.

4) Mix everything thoroughly until you get a smooth, creamy paste without any lumps.

And that's it! Your homemade rice flour and yogurt face pack is ready.

How to Use the Face Pack:

1) First, wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove sunscreen, makeup and everyday impurities.

2) Apply an even layer of the prepared face pack across your face, neck and décolleté. I also like using it on my arms and feet, as these areas get plenty of sun exposure too.

3) Leave it on for approximately 10–15 minutes. You can read a book, enjoy a cup of tea or simply relax during this time. Or, if you're anything like me, perhaps finish a few household chores. Haha!

4) Don't wait until the mask becomes completely dry and starts feeling tight. Rinse it off gently with lukewarm or cool water. Avoid vigorous rubbing or scrubbing while removing the pack.

5) Pat your skin dry with a soft, clean towel and follow up with your favourite skin-friendly moisturiser.

A little skincare reminder: Always do a patch test before trying a new homemade face pack, particularly if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin. Avoid applying it to irritated, broken or sunburnt skin. If you experience itching, redness or burning, wash it off immediately.

My Experience With This Natural Homemade Rice Flour Face Pack:

This traditional face pack is incredibly easy to prepare, and I enjoy using it as an occasional gentle exfoliating treatment. It leaves my skin feeling smoother, softer, and refreshed, which is why I thought of sharing this simple homemade recipe with all of you.

I usually use this pack around twice a month at night time, depending on how my skin is behaving. Since I have sensitive skin, I prefer not to overdo exfoliation. After all, more skincare doesn't necessarily mean better skin!

I also like using this face pack before special occasions when I want a smoother-looking skin texture for makeup application. Removing loose dead skin cells can help makeup sit more evenly, although I recommend trying the pack a day before an important event rather than experimenting immediately before getting ready.

One last thing! Always remember to follow up your face pack with a skin-friendly moisturiser or serum suited to your skin type. I prefer applying my skincare products while my skin is still slightly damp, as this helps seal in moisture and keeps my skin feeling soft and hydrated. Don't leave your skin feeling tight and dry after cleansing!

And please don't forget your sunscreen during the day. A homemade face pack cannot replace proper sun protection, especially if you're prone to tanning and hyperpigmentation.

So, that's my simple Rice Flour & Milk/Yogurt Face Pack recipe!
